Bayh Announces $4 Million to Expand Affordable Housing in Evansville
Community development funding will help create jobs in distressed neighborhoods
Washington, DC - June 29, 2009 - (RealEstateRama) — Senator Evan Bayh today announced that Evansville will receive nearly $4 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to expand affordable housing and improve urban communities. The funds are part of more than $44 million in community development grants awarded to Indiana.
“In addition to expanding the housing options for Hoosiers in need, these grants will improve the long-term viability of our neighborhoods by sparking development, helping retain and attract businesses and creating quality jobs,” Senator Bayh said.
Four types of grants have been issued by HUD to Indiana cities: Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), Emergency Shelter Grants (ESG), HOME program grants and Housing Opportunities for Persons with Aids (HOPWA) grants.
The CDBG program provides funding to develop viable urban communities by supporting affordable housing and creating jobs through the expansion and retention of businesses. The ESG program funds grants to improve emergency homeless shelters. The HOME and HOPWA programs aid local communities in developing housing for low-income families and for those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, respectively.
