Bayh Announces $9 Million in Grants for Community Development in Indiana
Funds will create middle-class jobs in distressed neighborhoods
Washington, DC - September 23, 2009 - (RealEstateRama) — Senator Evan Bayh today announced that Indiana will receive more than $9 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to expand affordable housing and improve local communities. The funds were awarded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act as part of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
Bloomington, Carmel and Muncie received individual grants, while $8.3 million was allocated to the state to support local community development efforts.
“This funding will put Hoosiers to work improving our neighborhoods and our economy,” Bayh said. “Reinvesting hard-earned Indiana tax dollars back into local community development projects will help stimulate economic growth and create middle-class jobs across our state.”
The CDBG program provides funding to carry out a wide range of community development activities directed toward revitalizing neighborhoods, economic development, and providing improved community facilities and services.
Eligible activities include:
• rehabilitation of residential and commercial buildings;
• construction of public facilities, such as water and sewer facilities, streets, neighborhood centers, schools and other infrastructure;
• energy conservation and development of renewable energy resources; and
• economic development and job creation/retention activities.
