This federal funding under the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP) will be used to remove tree obstructions and improve an existing runway. The funding also will be used to plan for a future runway extension and enable the airport to meet runway safety and protection zone standards.

U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly today applauded the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) announcement that it will invest in helping farmers stop harmful algae blooms from forming and expanding in Lake Erie. The USDA will award Indiana $1.5 million to help Hoosier farmers improve water quality in the western Lake Erie basin. U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly today participated in the official opening of the expanded runway at Gary/Chicago International Airport. Donnelly was joined by: Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson; officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Indiana Regional Development Authority, and Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority; and elected officials among others. Donnelly and his staff worked closely with key stakeholders to resolve issues that had been causing the runway expansion project to stall.
