State Road 212 bridge contract officially awarded

Construction will begin soon and project will be completed by June 2008

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. - The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) officially awarded the State Road 212 (S.R. 212) bridge rehabilitation project contract today to Superior Construction of Gary for $2 million. INDOT anticipates reopening the bridge to traffic around mid-June 2008.

“We closed this bridge in August for the safety of the traveling public because corrosion was happening quicker than we anticipated,” said Mike Monahan, INDOT LaPorte District Deputy Commissioner. “We’re excited the contract sold and can be completed at its accelerated schedule.”

The original bridge over the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) South Shore tracks was built in 1972. Inspectors continually monitored the bridge, especially in more recent years how corrosion was present in between the bridge approach spans to the center span/bridge deck. In 2003, a bridge rehabilitation project was authorized. The environmental review and design process followed its normal schedule and the rehabilitation project was set for an Oct. 17, 2007 letting.

But during an August 2007 inspection, it was noted that corrosion was happening faster than anticipated and it was determined to close the bridge as a safety precaution.

The original Oct. 17, 2007 letting date didn’t change, but INDOT personnel made fast-track improvements to minimize the inconvenience to the public of a closed bridge.

Details of the project include:

Part of the substructure, the entire superstructure and the entire bridge deck will be replaced;
Once a Notice to Proceed (NTP) is issued, fabricated items will be ordered and the contractor will work through the winter as weather allows;
The contract completion date is now mid-June 2008, as compared to a previous completion date of May 2009; and
INDOT will soon be meeting with the contractor to establish a construction schedule.
