Brooks Statement on Wednesday’s Markup of the Initial Steps Towards Obamacare Repeal and Replace

Washington, D.C. – (RealEstateRama) — Today, the Energy and Commerce Committee announced a full committee markup on Wednesday, March 8th, at 10:30 a.m. of one of the bills that begins the process of repealing Obamacare and rebuilding our healthcare system. The American Health Care Act, which includes this legislation and a bill to be considered by the Ways and Means Committee, will repeal Obamacare through budget reconciliation, and begin the process of building a more affordable, accessible healthcare system with more choices for Americans and their families. After budget reconciliation, the process of rebuilding our healthcare system will continue as additional legislative proposals are considered in Congress. Rep. Susan Brooks (R-IN) serves on the Health Subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee and will participate in the markup on Wednesday.

“Obamacare is broken. The individual market is collapsing under its own weight, and more insurers are refusing to participate in state exchanges leaving people without options and facing difficult decisions about the kind of healthcare coverage they can afford for themselves and their families,” Brooks said. “Certainly, some Americans benefited from the law, but far more Americans have been failed by it and are demanding relief. Wednesday’s markup will begin the process of repealing this failed policy and rebuilding a healthcare system that is more accessible and affordable for Hoosiers. Our plan protects healthcare coverage for people who have a pre-existing conditions and allows young adults under the age of 26 to remain on their parents’ insurance plans. This bill, which is available online tonight for the American people to read, is a good first step to restore stability in our healthcare marketplace and to once again put people back in charge of their healthcare decisions.”

The American Health Care Act will lower costs and empower people to make the right healthcare choices and decisions for themselves and for their families. Importantly, this legislation will:

  • Ensure coverage for people with pre-existing conditions.
  • Creates a Patient and State Flexibility Fund which allows a State to use the allocated funds for a variety of purposes, including promoting access to prevention, treatment, or recovery support services for people who are struggling with mental illness or substance abuse. Further, this fund can be used to provide assistance to reduce out-of-pocket costs like co-payments, co-insurance, premiums, deductibles, etc.
  • Limits instability in healthcare markets by incentivizing continuous healthcare coverage, a provision that encourages people to purchase the healthcare plan that works best for them and to remain enrolled in a healthcare plan.
  • Increases options and flexibility in healthcare coverage by removing the “bronze, silver and gold” tiers of healthcare plans that have severely limited plan options for people.
